Training

Expanding bioinformatics expertise across Africa requires investment in people as much as infrastructure. ABI’s training programme is designed to equip researchers, students, and professionals at every career stage with the skills, knowledge, and networks they need to advance the field on the continent – from ABI-delivered courses to a curated library of world-class external resources.

ABI Courses

High-quality, Africa-focused bioinformatics training is central to our mission. As the Institute grows, we will deliver a range of courses designed to address the specific needs of African researchers and institutions, spanning foundational bioinformatics skills through to advanced topics in genomics, data science, and computational biology.

ABI Bioinformatics Summer School 2026

The African Bioinformatics Institute will be hosting a Summer School from 08 – 19 June 2026 at the African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data Intensive Sciences (ACE-Uganda), in partnership with the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), and the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit. The aim is to provide comprehensive training on bioinformatics computational resources, and domain-specific tools and workflows to improve participants’ proficiency in executing, interpreting, and communicating analyses for major bioinformatics studies, with a special focus on genomics.

APBA/ABI Joint Agri-informatics ‘Bring Your Own Data’ (BYOD) Hackathon 2026

Advances in genome sequencing technology and bioinformatics are revolutionizing crop improvement by enabling faster, more accurate, and cost-effective breeding. However, many breeding programmes across Africa continue to face significant capacity gaps in translating genomic data into actionable breeding decisions. These challenges are often linked not to data generation, but to limitations in data analysis, interpretation, and reporting.

What to expect from ABI courses:

Targeted training across a range of experience levels and disciplines

Delivery by leading experts from across the ABI network and beyond

Content grounded in African biological data and health contexts

Formats designed for accessibility across the continent, including online and hybrid options
